CHARACTER NAME: Allen Walker
SERIES: D.Gray-man (Advance warning, this wiki is made from pain and tears)
CANON POINT: Chapter 206, just before staggering inside the home where he recovered after Mana's death so many years ago.
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: Seen here and here.
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A
PERSONALITY: Allen is almost completely defined by the words left to him by his adoptive father Mana: "Keep walking." It's what supports him at his core and acts as the main drive in every choice he makes. Through these words and the values imbued in him by Mana - in a truly literal sense, as we come to discover later - Allen has become a pillar of determination and inner strength, capable of carrying on and holding on to hope even in the most extreme and deadly circumstances, particularly when others are in danger. He is shown to overcome nigh-unbeatable odds, such as the resurrection of his Innocence after its destruction by Tyki Mikk or its evolution to a synchronization rating of over 100% - a level achieved only by Generals of the order - in order to protect his friends. While Allen's will to overcome all obstacles is strong, it is never for his own benefit; he has shown time and time again that, if it will save or protect the ones around him, he will sacrifice himself without any hesitation. This is not only for friend, or even just for humanity itself. Allen has even demonstrated that when the souls of Akuma are in danger of being destroyed without the purifying power of the Innocence, he will throw himself into harm's way without a second thought to protect them, displayed early in the series when, upon witnessing an Akuma made to self-destruct, he hurls himself towards it in an attempt to save it even at risk of his own death. Though an Exorcist, he has said that his life is not only to protect humanity but the corrupted souls of the Akuma as well. No matter who he is protecting, however, it is clear that Allen does not consider his life his own... and that, compared to the lives of others, his own is of little consequence.
Allen also displays an unerring sense of empathy for friend and foe alike, despite the stigma he endures for his sympathies. It is not only Akuma he cares for; even for the Noah, his sworn enemies, he has felt a sense of compassion. He is incapable of seeing situations as black and white, instead focusing on all the shades of gray in between. Though the Noah mercilessly kill humans for their own purposes he has seen the good in them time and time again, unable to ignore the humanity they still possess. He has earned the ire of his own allies for the way he battles his enemies, as seen during his battle with Tyki in the Ark when he attempts to rescue the Noah despite his ruthless attacks against them and nearly killing Allen himself mere moments before. Even with Rhode, who has tortured Exorcists and humans alike, he cannot help but see the good in her, treating her almost kindly in their interactions. He clearly doesn't consider them allies, but neither will he write them off as being without hope for salvation.
There is one Noah to which he has yet to truly decide his feelings towards: Nea Walker, the 14th. Nea was destroyed by the Millennium Earl after he massacred the rest of his family in an attempt to take over as the Earl; decades after his death his soul was hidden in Allen's body to hide it from the Noah, destined to someday erode his host and take over completely. It is because of Nea that Allen is capable of controlling the Ark and more recently he has come to the surface more and more, forcing Allen's consciousness down to use his body as his own, however brief these moments may be. Allen's feelings are best described as confused in regards to his parasitic intruder. Nea is Mana's brother - making him Allen's adoptive uncle - and the person Mana loved more than anyone else in the world. Many a time since the discovery of the 14th has Allen wondered if Mana actually loved him for himself -- or simply saw Nea inside of him. Though he later accepts this and believes that Mana loved him no matter what, we cannot help but think that this fear still dogs him all the same. He feels a great deal of resentment towards the 14th for the influence he's had on his life and refuses to accept his own supposedly inevitable demise; though his control grows weaker and weaker he fights tooth and nail to keep his body as his own. However, even with someone who is slowly destroying him he's incapable of seeing him as only an evil being; after being imprisoned for his so-called betrayal of the Order he wonders if he has been unfair in judging Nea without at first trying to understand him... but it's not a thought on which he can dwell, as his near-acceptance of the Noah nearly causes him to be consumed by him, saved only by the interference of Link and Apocryphos.
Recently we have come to learn a particularly interesting fact about Allen's polite, open personality: It is not, in fact, his own. As a child he was abrasive and suspicious, with good reason; sold off to a circus by his parents after being born with a frightening and supposedly malformed arm, he was abused and taken advantage of many a time. It was only Mana that treated him kindly (though in the novel recently released it is said that Mana's madness had Allen mistaken for his own dog), and Mana that he idolized completely. However, after Mana's death, Allen was approached by the Millennium Earl to resurrect him and naively agreed, causing Mana to be brought back as an Akuma. Allen's unawakened Innocence reacted immediately -- and despite his attempts to stop himself, Allen killed Mana with his own hands. He was recovered by Cross Marian, his future teacher, who brought him to a safehouse where he could be cared for; the damage done to him was severe, both physically and mentally. For months he did not move or speak and when he finally did, everything about him had changed; he was no longer the foul-mouthed street urchin he had been before. Everything about him had become almost completely like Mana. It is pointed out several times when this mask of his slips - when he becomes aggressive or snide, or speaks less formally with companions - and it seems that Allen himself is not completely aware of the transformation he has made, attributing it more to the 14th than to his adoptive father. Though the change has come from severe trauma, it seems that for the most part it is here to stay; Allen embraces these aspects of Mana without hesitation, doing anything to be close to the father he lost.
ABILITIES: Allen is an Exorcist; with him he brings the power of his Innocence, Crown Clown. His Innocence is known as a parasitic-type, meaning that it's a physical part of him -- namely his left arm. When activated Crown Clown forms as a coat and mask, acting as a sort of armor that allows Allen to take significantly more damage than an average human. His Innocence has also displayed the ability to manipulate his body when he is too injured to fight on his own, allowing him to continue a battle despite horrific injury.
Crown Clown also has offensive capabilities; during battle Allen's left arm transforms from its usual dark, tough-skinned form to become a claw-tipped weapon, as seen here. His left arm itself is primarily for close-range battle but is capable of some long-range attacks launched from the claws themselves. He is also able to use an ability known as Clown Belt, sending long sashes of his Innocence out to grapple enemies and objects alike. More recently Crown Clown has evolved further; in situations where his foe is extremely powerful, Allen's entire life arm can be transformed into what's known as the Sword of Exorcism, seen here. This sword is incapable of harming allies; it has been shown it can be driven right through humans and Exorcists and cause them no harm. It instead specifically targets Akuma and Noah, destroying the nature of their evil. Allen is the only human that has been harmed by the Sword of Exorcism, as he harbors the soul of Nea, the 14th Noah.
Aside from his power as an Exorcist, Allen also has a cursed left eye given to him by his adoptive father, Mana Walker, when Allen made him into an Akuma. With it he is capable of seeing the soul tied to an Akuma, identifying it even if it is disguised in human form. His eye has also "evolved," allowing him to sense the presence of Akuma within a several mile radius. He is also capable of using it to display these souls to the people around him should he so choose.
His final ability belongs to him only through the presence of Nea in his body. He is able to use the ability of the Ark, a vessel created by the Millennium Earl, to instantly create a gate from his location to any location he has been to before. This is due to a musical score left for him by Nea, designating him the Musician that is needed to access the Ark's abilities. Allen previously needed to play the song or sing it aloud, but after opening numerous gates he is now able to simply imagine the song and the Ark will respond to his commands.
POSSESSIONS: Allen will arrive with nothing aside from the clothes on his back and Timcanpi, the small yellow golem given to him by Cross Marian.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Whatever happens, I'm an Exorcist.
Allen all but tumbled from the Ark's gate, clutching his twinging Innocence to his chest in a desperate attempt to make it calm down. For a moment he hunched over into the snow to cradle it as he would a child, breath slow and tremulous as it came in through his nose and hissed out through the clench of his teeth.
"Come on, Crown Clown," he murmured softly, stroking it with his fingertips. While not fully responsive, his Innocence settled enough for him to at least get his bearings on his surroundings. Yes, he remembered this place. Not well, not all of it -- but he remembered the time he spent here after his Master had taken him on as his pupil. He remembered the happiness; the laughter; the days before they left to begin their journey filled with expensive wine, hundreds of women and endless piles of debt. Those were the days before he knew of things like the Ark, or Apocryphos, or the 14th Noah.
Perhaps that was why he chose this place. To find a piece of the past.
You are the worst of them all, Allen Walker.
Somehow he would master these demons inside of him - Noah and Innocence both - and he would return to his friends. His family. He would not forget his promise. No matter how long or hard the road ahead would be he would keep walking, step by agonizing step, and do whatever had to be done to fix this terrible world.
The snow began to soak through the cloth at his knees, drawing him out of his reverie. Yes, it would do him no good to sit outside and freeze; he had to keep going. Rising to his feet with Crown Clown held close against him, he began to the door. It was like coming home again for a little boy that had forgotten where home had once been. Here began the first leg of his journey towards changing it all for the better. He reached out to the front door... before stopping mere inches away, staring down at the familiar knob in confusion. Try as he might, he couldn't move.
He could only watch as everything faded to black.
